“Our Front Page” Progress Update

Hi all, just a bit of an update on progress as I’m sure you are wondering what is happening with the updates on the site. Following on from Bill’s post “Our home page”, Duncan and I have been working away in the background trying to get as much of the web related things sorted as possible, ably assisted by Hayley, Lizzie and Allan, who have been testing things to destruction.

The following is an update on what is likely to be implemented over the next few weeks:

1.  A redesigned front page to give a more “gardening” focused feel.

2.  Greater focus on new members on the front page.

3.  The ability for members to select a category for their blogs. (Selection between: Gardening Blogs, Gardening Videos, Children’s Gardening Stories, Odds and Sods)

4.  A Search facility.

5.  An easier method of accessing personal member’s area and adding personal profile details.

6.  Tags – these are being dispensed with so will not be needed.

7.  FAQs section, please submit anything you think should be included here to one of the Moderators, Hayleyagora, Gonewest or RonValley.

8. Chat page, removed.

9. Diary Blogs – This is being worked on, but tricky, so not quite there yet.

10. Membership boosting. We have advertising posters in the pipeline.

We have already started implementing some of the changes that do not impact on the rest of the site and hope to begin implementing the more complex ones over the next few weeks. You may occasionally see a “site maintenance” notice; that will be the changes going in. Please bear with us when these are happening, we will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.

If anyone would like to have a look at the work “in progress” we are testing things at www.gcshed.co.uk.  You won’t be able to log in or register, but please feel free to have a look around.

I am really, really impressed – and I think we now have a set-up which, with the right support from its members, can go on to become a really great website, beloved of gardeners, and full of personality (that’s US) It has made me determined to get down to thinking about door-to-door leaflets to recruit new members from new housing developments – which I will get printed for delivery as time and place permit. We have been given the wherewithall by our dear techie geeks, and now its up to the rest of us to contribute as only we can, to be proactive in recruiting new members, to give them a GC welcome, and make sure they enjoy the experience.

First of the big updates went in today, most of you won’t notice anything yet as it is just getting things in place for other updates, so sorry about the disruption earlier.

However, the group admins should now be able to upload photos to topics in their own groups.
